Summerville

Just 20 miles north of Charleston lies “Flowertown in the Pines”, more commonly known as Summerville. The nickname stems from the gorgeous flowers that bloom abundantly in the springtime, such as azaleas and wisteria, and also reflects this towns historical love of it’s pine trees. In the late 1700’s malaria sent Charlestonians out of the city and into what is now called Summerville, thinking the groves of pine trees kept the mosquitoes away. Even today, there are laws in this town that prevent the cutting of these trees. Each spring brings the Azalea Festival to Summerville. This celebration honors the beauty of the area and brings artists from all over the United States to display their works.

Summerville has a growing population of over 30,000 people who are proud to call this town their home. They are most proud of their award winning school system. The downtown district is alive with its own theatre troupe, restaurants, locally owned shops and beautiful historic homes. Azalea Park is made up of 20 acres providing it’s visitors with walking paths, picnic tables, an amphitheatre, tennis courts and a beautiful pond and gazebo. A family oriented lifestyle is found in Summerville with its people working together for the betterment of the community today and in the future.
